CONTENT AND PURPOSE:

gentle1

Feeling love for animals is easy. Acting on a strong and genuine desire to help animals is commendable. Feeling our own pain in response to their suffering, however, can be overwhelming. When we love animals deeply, when we are sensitive to their pain and are exposed to their suffering we can become depleted. Hearing about and witnessing their stress and trauma can create very real physical, emotional or spiritual fatigue. Compassion can hurt.

Compassion fatigue is an issue of importance for all people who have devoted their lives, their careers or their volunteer time to helping animals: Those who work in animal shelters, humane investigations, rescue, sanctuary and advocacy organizations; those who are deployed to disaster areas to rescue animals; those who work on Sea Shepherd ships or are on-shore volunteers; those who do undercover work in factory farms; those who spend hours every day carrying out important activism at their computers and those who work tirelessly in any animal rights and animal welfare roles.

For those who work directly to help animals, who work tirelessly to save their lives and make their lives safer and better, and those who support animals through their grief and trauma, the probability of experiencing compassion fatigue is high. From research in the traumatology field we've learned that people who are involved with trauma victims are at high risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress, commonly called compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is the unique form of stress experienced only by people helping, treating or supporting trauma victims. It is different from stress and burnout in that its cause is always related to caring and exposure to others' crisis.

Empty the tanks
It takes dedicated, strong, empathic, compassionate and loving people to endure the on-going exposure to the stress and pain of the animals they serve. These dedicated, strong, empathic and loving people deserve support. They deserve acknowledgement, understanding, comfort, nurturing, and tools for coping and rejuvenation to continue their work and lead healthy lives.

To heal compassion fatigue, we must learn how to continually acknowledge and process the strong and overwhelming feelings that are a natural part of this work, and to give ourselves the same dedication, love, compassion and care we give the animals. We must learn to practice not only everyday coping techniques, but to employ long term healing strategies as well to be sure that we have not stuffed or denied the understandable pain we feel from all the horror inflicted onto animals. We cannot serve the animals we love so dearly if we are chronically fatigued, stressed and burned out. If we are to continue our work giving the best that we have to give and if we are to enjoy our lives, then caring for ourselves must be as important as caring for the animals we serve.

In this workshop, the following content is covered over five sessions:

CONTENT AND PURPOSE:

We are activists and advocates for animals because we are passionate about saving their lives and making the world a safer and better place for them. The work is long, often hard, and it is never done. By its nature it involves hearing about, reading about and sometimes directly witnessing horrific trauma for animals. This exposure to the animals’ trauma—often continual exposure—along with our passion, makes us very susceptible to an array of symptoms and feelings called compassion fatigue.

In this two and one-half hour teleclass, we'll explore feelings that are common in this work such as a sense of helplessness, despair, anguish, grief, anger, anxiety, hatred, guilt, exhaustion and overwhelm. We'll look at the power of acknowledging, expressing and normalizing our feelings versus judging them. We'll work with tools to reduce the intensity of any emotions that may come up for us, and tools to process and release certain feelings rather than allowing them to become stuck inside of us, hampering our ability to enjoy life and to be effective advocates for the animals we love so much.

Outline of content is covered:

• The absolute “normalness” of having overwhelming feelings when working in animal welfare and activism
• Typical feelings we experience
• Understanding the energies and healing requirements for strong, intense feelings
• The Golden Rule of coping with and healing feelings from compassion fatigue
• Myths and facts about processing feelings
• What overwhelming feelings need
• TOOL:  Helping the animals and ourselves when we feel helpless
• TOOL: The order in which we offer help makes a difference for the animals & us
• Understanding the Trio of Taboos:  Anger, hate and not forgiving
• Becoming a “Spiritual Bypass Bubble Person” doesn’t help us or the animals
• More on hate, anger and forgiveness
• We must learn to be comfortable being both warriors and healers
• TOOLS to Calm the Heart: breathe; acceptance and self-talk;  offering tender empathy, peace and love to our overwhelming feelings
• Summary
• Resources

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these - to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run With the Wolves

As activists and animal welfare workers and volunteers you DO stand up and show your souls. The light of your souls shines for the animals and so many of them know it, see it, feel it and benefit from it. And you are so brave to use the energies of both fierceness and mercy, warrior energy and healing energy, for the animals. Don’t ever stop. The animals need us. And take the very best of care of yourselves as you do your work. You are as important as the animals. May this teleclass help you on your journey.

With great respect and much love,
Teresa

TESTIMONIALS:

Thank you so much for giving of yourself so clearly, informatively and eloquently! This information gave me more tools to cope with the sadness and overwhelm I still feel when I see posts on Facebook and receive emails from the many agencies trying to assist with the animals who have come across evil.   For me one of the take aways that hit home on so many levels was your take on forgiveness.  I have learned to accept some situations in my life as they are, without completely forgiving those who have caused harm, and I am good with it. But when I hear the whole “you must forgive to be at peace” thing, it makes me feel as though I need to work harder at something I’d really rather just leave as is. Or something is wrong with me or I’m bad for not completely forgiving.   Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me validation!  Thank you so much, once again Teresa for all you do!
~ Annette H., California

I gained some useful skills and I feel like overall this bolstered my emotional intelligence.
~ Fannie S, Florida

Priceless tools are in this class! The exercises helped to calm me. The handouts are clear, help to follow the class and help to remember the practical things covered in class. Teresa's handouts are always a very valuable tool for her classes. the notes, the references strengthen all that I learn. They are also as valuable as a textbook to keep and keep going back to.
~ Linda K, California

So much info to put into my tool box on ways to cope with situations that I cannot help directly with: processing feelings, not ignoring them, not needing to buy into the spiritual bypass!  Hearing that sometimes forgiveness seems to be all about the perpetrator, not the victim, also hit home with me.  I will keep the handouts for future reference - the graphic of the butterfly trying to go up stairs with a rock tied to it is beautiful! And the graphic about finding your pod with the same purpose as yours is also a keeper!  Love Teresa's voice and her intelligence and experience shines through all she says - yet with a deep spiritual undertone.
~ Rory H, California

I think absolutely everyone working in animal welfare could benefit from this course and any others like it. Compassion fatigue is an occupational hazard for us, and just like a miner wouldn't go to work without a helmet, we shouldn't go to work without the psychological "protective gear" that a course like this offers.

I am lucky I have a therapist who works well with me and has taught me a lot, but seeing some ideas presented differently and within the context of the work I do was extremely helpful--Pausing to breathe, being mindful of the fact that what I am doing is enough, how different feelings have different needs, taking care of myself when I need to - lots of ideas were very helpful for me to consider and I'll absolutely be able to apply them almost every day.

Understanding that we are continually experiencing trauma and therefore needing a continual approach was really significant for me; it means that I'm not failing if I continue to experience the same difficult things over and over, and that I shouldn't feel guilty about needing continual help and therapy to cope.

I think it covered so much in a short time that it was perfect. I can come back and read the slides and my notes whenever I feel overwhelmed, and knowing that makes me feel more prepared for the overwhelming feelings I'll inevitably have again in the future.

What really helped me during these exercises was realizing that I more readily give my love and empathy to others than I do to myself. And I realized that I was just as deserving as anyone else of those things, no matter what happens.
~ Molly W, Washington

It was wonderful  It was not only very informative but also very healing. Thank you. When all participants all sent peace and love to the first volunteer, I felt peace and love within me. It was a beautiful experiment that showed both receiver and sender benefits, that helps everybody.

I so very much appreciated the information provided on forgiveness especially, along with other emotions. Forgiving somebody/something has been a "challenge" for me, personally. There is enormous "pressure" to forgive everybody else regardless of my own feelings or emotions. Also, who am I to forgive anybody than my own self??? It reminded me to acknowledge, honor, and heal my own feelings and emotions first. Thank you, Teresa. The call was very healing.

I have been reading sections of the materials. I love how Teresa helps us understand the spiritual approach and the human psychological/counseling approach. And, how they do not necessarily align perfectly. Thank you.

Throughout my whole life, until recently, I was taught to completely dismiss, ignore, and shutdown my own feelings and needs while serving everybody else's feelings and needs. I did not exist. I am learning to acknowledge and honor my own feelings and needs, so the exercises were perfect. They were wonderful reminders.

Teresa is always warm, loving, and understanding. I felt very safe during the class as usual. Thank you.
Regardless of one's profession or one's level of involvement with animals, the information and the techniques Teresa shares are extremely valuable and healing. I am so grateful Teresa offered this class.
~ Sally S, Nevada

Thank you so much for this amazing class, so well thought out, organized and expressed with so much love and compassion. You truly outdid yourself this time.

It confirmed various techniques and ideas I'd already had but perhaps wasn't sure about putting to use in quite this way, in addition to lending insight into many new ideas and a few specific techniques as well. I think the best piece of understanding that came from this for me was the idea that all of these feelings are OK (and should not be squelched!) - that they are part of being human!! Living in Norway, as I do, it's even more of a "crime" to feel /express anger and sadness. Grief is perhaps the most taboo. I have ended up in somewhat of a cycle of anger-to-guilt-to-anger-to-guilt many times in the past few years. Bless you, Teresa!

Various practical things in addition to general (and specific!) understandings.. but to highlight a few, "ordering" the way we help (setting the overwhelm to the side and focusing first and foremost on the animal who needs help) - this was a totally new idea for me, and soooooo logical. You explained it so well and it will really help me moving forward. Reminding me to use EFT (and to use it specifically on myself for the overwhelming feelings), Thirdly, again, the better understanding of the fact that anger, sadness, grief are ALL NORMAL!!! I really needed to hear that being surrounded by a culture that teaches people the opposite. Your grief course at ASN was one of the most valuable courses I've ever taken in my entire life, Teresa. It has helped me to deal with my own grief, and has helped many of my friends and clients here in Norway who have never learned anything close to what you teach. This class today was equally as valuable, Teresa, in just under 3 hours!! What a blessing to have you in this world, Teresa Wagner  THANK YOU!!!

Nothing could make this class better, Teresa!! It was perfect :-)
~ Lauren O, Vestfold, Norway

Loved every bit of it!  Reminder for self-care and different ways that can look.  Hearing your perspective on how our individual work does make a difference for the animals, whether that's one or a million (and especially that making a difference for one is just as valuable to the one).

Great to look back at for reference. Also loved the additional resources provided. I especially loved the exercise of being present with and accepting our overwhelming feelings. That's hard for me to do.
~ Robin S, California

One of the practical things that will help me is the idea of the order in which we offer help.
When the exercise was done sending positive energy to someone--which was effective in less than a minute--that was very powerful!  I recommended this class already, as any class ever taken with Teresa has been above expectation. She comes from a place of knowledge, and maybe even more importantly, love.
~ Donna K, New Jersey

WELCOME

The life of an animal is as important and significant as the life of a human.

The death of an animal is as important and significant as the death of a human.

The grief of those who mourn the loss of beloved animals is as important and significant as the grief of those who mourn the loss of beloved humans.

Grief is indifferent to the species lost ~

For those of us who feel called to support those who grieve animals, it is important that we embrace these truths, and build the skills and energetic finesse to compassionately and competently serve.

The established trend of the last decade of offering online studies, teleclasses and webinars has changed the face of educational instruction everywhere. Though nothing will ever replace the unique intimacy of in person workshops, distance learning allows us to participate in far more educational opportunities due to reduced time and money required for travel. Our Animal Loss and Grief Support program is online studies, teleclass based which allows for maximum participation of those with a desire and interest in learning about how to cope with the loss of a pet and how to support others with this loss.

For people who love animals profoundly, losing them to physical death is one of the most poignant, sacred and often emotionally devastating life passages they may ever experience. Our grief at these times deserves to be honored with acknowledgment of the legitimacy of our loss, and to be supported with great love, tender compassion and empathic skill. The experience of pet loss has been disenfranchised far too long. Everyone who experiences the loss of a deeply beloved animal deserves the same acknowledgement, loving support and opportunities for compassionate, competent professional help that is typically available to people who lose human loved ones. This program was designed to provide this for grievers and to teach others to provide it with confidence and competence.

The issues of how to cope with the loss of a pet, healing our own grief and helping others with their healing from loss have been a passionate focus of my work for over two decades. After significant healing from a traumatic loss in my own life, I offered my first pet loss workshop in 1986 to a small group of just five people. Since then I have had the privilege of working with thousands of people in my private practice and workshops who have gone through the journey of losing their animal loved ones. The curriculum and the classes I’ve designed and teach in this program are based on the combined wisdom of these wonderful souls--the people and their animals--who’ve trusted me with their stories and pain, the professionals in the field of psychology and spirituality who specialize in grief from whom I have learned, and the accumulation of my own experiences of loss and healing grief. Other faculty in the program include veterinary and animal communication professionals dedicated to support people through pet loss and grief (full bios for each are available with a quick click in relevant class descriptions below).

Teresa Wagner

SPECIAL NOTE: I want to assure those of you who have taken any of these classes during the program's previous affiliation with Animal Spirit Network  that all credits are transferable. Changes to note in the program  are that most class fees have been significantly reduced, many new classes are being offered and developed, and the written field work (now called written class review) now includes a requied one on one telephone mentoring and review session. This email address is being protected from spambots. PURPOSE of the PROGRAM
To provide the opportunity for people who have lost beloved animals in their family and for professionals who serve animals and people in their practice to have a variety of in depth, professional caliber classes available with the convenience of online studies and teleclasses to help them learn how to cope with the loss of a pet, understand and more deeply heal from loss, understand the animals’ perspectives, and to compassionately and competently help others.

WHY A PROGRAM OF STUDY?
To provide a robust and comprehensive program of professional competency development involving 73 hours of training, leading to a certification of completion for those who wish to build or augment their knowledge and skill base in the field of animal loss and grief support, which in turn will help more grievers receive a high level of compassionate, competent and effective support.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Classes are for both all animal lovers who have interest in any of the individual classes and for professionals wanting to build or add to their knowledge and skill in this field. For professionals and lay people alike, individual classes can be taken as desired. Though prerequisites apply to some of the higher level classes, one does not have to enroll in the program of study to take a class. Classes are open to and appropriate for all those who love animals as well as animal communicators, healing arts professionals such as flower essence and aromatherapy practitioners and energy healers, veterinarians and other veterinary staff, animal shelter and rescue group workers, trainers and behaviorists, pet sitters, dog walkers, pet loss support group facilitators, therapists who want to learn more about pet loss, as well as friends and family members who want to fully support their loved ones who are grieving or caregiving. If you are interested in enrolling in the program, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for an application questionnaire.

HOW IS THIS PROGRAM DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ONLINE STUDIES, TELECLASS BASED PET LOSS & GRIEF SUPPORT PROGRAMS?
There are three ways this program is unique:

1. The program is by intention a holistic integration of psychological and spiritual principles.
Just as many people may become stressed when attempting to integrate western and holistic veterinary information, opinions and recommended treatments which are sometimes at odds, so too can grievers become confused by literature or classes on how to cope with the loss of a pet that are exclusively or predominately either psychologically or spiritually based. This is especially true when authors or teachers entrenched in one view criticize or discount the other view as if it has no merit whatsoever--leaving emotionally distressed, vulnerable grievers wondering what to believe and what might help them.

A foundational belief in this program and all of the classes is that the most effective, satisfactory and long lasting approach to healing grief is an integrative and comprehensive one--one that includes both grounded psychological principles and support as well as acknowledgement of and exploration of the spiritual aspects of death, loss and grief which may include relevant holistic healing modalities.

There is perhaps never a more compelling time in our lives on earth that arouses questions about our spiritual beliefs than the impending or actual physical death of a loved one. To exclude issues of spirituality in classes about pet loss would be limiting and incomplete. On the other hand, to assume that strong spiritual beliefs in an afterlife and the ongoing life of our loved one’s spirit means there is no emotional grief work to be done and need not be covered in grief healing education would also be a limited and incomplete view. Grief is both an emotional and spiritual process. When grieving we need loving and practical support for our emotional pain as well as support to explore our spiritual beliefs and how they may be impacting our healing. Psychological and spiritual principles and resources are presented in these classes, with great respect for both.

2. Values are not imposed in this program.
Each journey of loss and grief is different, each grievers’ needs unique, and the resources and philosophies most suited to help each of us varies. Based on a client-centered, empathy-based approach to counseling and healing, class information is shared and exercises offered in the classes to support participants to make their own decisions and to clarify and feel more comfortable with their own values.

A foundational belief in this program is that choices and beliefs surrounding end of life and grief are deeply personal and sacred, and, that it is highly inappropriate and unethical for anyone supporting others through loss to attempt to impose their personal moral beliefs.

What we teach in the skill based classes in grief support is how to compassionately and non-judgmentally support others’ values and decisions and their explorations thereof, however similar or different others’ values may be from our own.

3. The program is comprehensive and in depth
Classes in the curriculum cover the journey from end-of-life hospice care and decision making, physical death, understanding and healing our own grief, effectively helping others through loss, and understanding the animals‘ perspective throughout. The full program includes over 73 hours of class time, case studies and mentoring/coaching plus the time required for field work for those pursuing certification. Class content exceeds superficial review of the topics. Each class covers the related subject material in breadth and depth, while also focusing on practical application and resources for continued value and tools beyond the completion of a particular class.

ARE THE CLASSES LIVE TELECLASSES OR ONLINE STUDIES?
The scheduling of live classes varies each year (please check each course description for scheduled classes), with almost all available on demand. The availability of on demand participation allows you to take classes at your convenience when live class dates do not fit your schedule. All on demand classes include the full recording from a live class and all handouts.

REQUIRED CLASSES

Finding the Grace in Grief
with Teresa Wagner, MS   1 hour
When we suffer a great loss, pain is inevitable. Though there is no magic wand to avoid the pain of grief, there is much we can do to support the healing of our pain, including being open to the energy of grace. The state of grace is the other side of pain. As different as these two energies may be, they do exist simultaneously. When the heart is broken open, it is not just pain that results from the breaking, but the possibility for growth of the heart as it heals. This introductory talk offers four distinct strategies, each with several practical resources, to help us in finding the grace in grief.  THIS IS A FREE CLASS, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you want the recording.

The Legacies of Love and Grief Support Skills classes are considered the core classes of the program and should be taken before other classes when possible.

Legacies of Love: Healing From the Loss of Your Animal Loved One
with Teresa Wagner, MS   8 hours
The overall objective of this intimate and experiential class is to provide in depth opportunities and tools for those who have lost their animal loved ones to heal their hearts and use the crisis of loss to grow. This facilitated group process--augmented by over 70 pages of handouts-- gently and lovingly provides participants with an opportunity to express their grief, understand their grief, and explore many strategies to heal their grief hands-on, with ample opportunity for active discussion and sharing. This class provides opportunities to look intimately and in depth at our loss and grief, to feel closer to the spirit of our animal loved ones in spirit, and to identify and cherish the gifts and legacies they have left us.

Grief Support Skills: Effectively Supporting Others Who Grieve
with Teresa Wagner, MS    8 hours
This in depth, experiential class covers both concepts important to understanding the grief healing process and the qualities and skills needed to effectively support others. A Grief Support Competencies Profile created from a competency analysis study conducted by Teresa Wagner while working at a hospice serves as a reference and self assessment tool in the class. Skills of empathic listening and empathic questioning are reviewed and practiced, as are concepts and exercises in the areas of: why animal loss is different; self disclosure for helping professionals; specific issues of boundaries for helping professionals; intimate self awareness of our motivation to help; knowledge of grief support resources; specific do’s and don’ts when supporting grievers.

Animals' Perspectives of Death, The Other Side, and Coming Back
with Teresa Wagner, MS 4 hours
This teleclass is ideal for anyone who wants to hear stories from the animals to enhance their understanding about the diversity of what is possible in death, the other side, and coming back—directly from the perspective of the animals' souls. This is not a class on the dogma of any particular religious, spiritual or metaphysical belief system. You will not be told things about death and afterlife as it if they are the ultimate, final or exclusive truth. You will hear stories offered as information to help you clarify your own beliefs, and to be inspired by the animals themselves. If you would like to hear stories from the animals to add to your understanding about the mystery of souls coming to and leaving the earth, this teleclass would be appropriate for you.

Understanding and Preparing for Euthanasia
with Windi Wojdak, RVT   4 hours
As animal caretakers we will almost certainly be faced at some point with decisions regarding the care of seriously ill animals in our family, or, supporting friends, loved ones or clients in this situation. Whether due to illness, acute injury, or tragic cases of severe behavior problems, most of us will at some point be presented with euthanasia as an option in the care of a beloved animal. Having an understanding of how euthanasia works before we are faced with the decision can significantly reduce the emotional stress at the time of decision making or during the experience of the actual euthanasia process. When we are working hard to remain emotionally present with our animals during end-of-life periods, it can be enormously helpful to have this information and education ahead of time about what to expect and how we can best make decisions regarding euthanasia.

Essential Counseling Skills for Animal Communicators, Healing Arts Practitioners & Those Who Provide Grief Support
with Teresa Wagner, MS     10 hours
This workshop is appropriate for both professionals and students of animal communication, any healing arts fields, and those in grief support roles. The concepts, issues and skills covered in the workshops are applicable to communication with both humans and animals.

The workshop is about the conscious integration of basic yet powerful counseling skills into our work in animal communication, healing and or grief support. When strategically and intentionally applied, these skills allow us to bring the best of what our souls have to offer to serve others. Compassion and love alone do not heal if the helper lacks empathic inquiry into the client's story and empathic response to their stories and feelings, and merely imposes tools and beliefs of their own. It is the skillful expression of empathy, along with compassion and love, that offers a haven of safety and understanding for another's heart to heal and emerge in wholeness. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn very specific empathic skills to bring the power of our love, compassion and expertise alive to serve the clients we care about so much.

It's not about becoming a therapist. It's about learning time tested concepts, skills and ethics from the field of therapy--skills and competencies which research has shown to have an extremely positive impact on the growth of clients--and applying them to our grief support and healing arts work.

Preventing and Healing Compassion Fatigue and Burnout
6 hours   Will be held in 2014 or 2015
Compassion fatigue is the unique form of stress experienced by people helping or treating others who are are in trauma. It is different from ordinary stress and burnout in that its cause is always related to caring or exposure to others' crisis or pain. To prevent and heal compassion fatigue, we must learn how to give ourselves the same mercy and compassion we give the animals, and we must be continually self aware to the symptoms of compassion fatigue and maintain a commitment to self care. In this class we thoroughly review the symptoms of compassion fatigue including completion of a self assessment and explore a wide variety of techniques of coping, building resiliency and healing.

For the 11th required class, choose one of the following three classes on energetic/vibrational healing. One of these must be chosen for completion of the required classes. Any of them can be taken as an elective.

Flower Essences for End of Life, Caregiver Stress and Healing Grief
with Teresa Wagner, MS   4 hours
Learn what flower essences are and how to use them to support the sacred transition of death, the grieving process, and caregiver & grief support roles. Death from the physical body is one of the most sacred periods of time on earth. Yet it also often brings tremendous emotional pain to those of us who grieve the physical loss of loved ones, intense stress to those of us in caregiving roles, sometimes uncertainty for those of us wanting to provide support to those who grieve, and a great desire for a peaceful death experience for our loved ones. Flower essences provide us with gentle yet powerful healing energy to support both our loved ones and ourselves for the transition of death, grieving, caregiving and supporting others.
